Development approval for the Wambo Wind Farm was received from the Queensland Government in October 2020. Stage One is now under construction and will consist of 42 wind turbines, adding 252 megawatts (MW) of clean energy to Queensland’s energy system by 2025. Stage Two will commence in 2024 and will add a further 41 turbines and 254.2 MW to the project, booting the total generation to more than 500 MW by early 2026.
The Wambo Wind Farm is the next large-scale wind farm operating and delivering power into the grid in South West Queensland. The project is located in a strong stable part of the national grid, connecting to the network close to the Tarong coal-fired power station, and close to the large electrical loads in South East Queensland. The Wambo wind farm at full capacity is expected to generate enough energy to power 170,500 QLD homes per year.
